A Markham police officer helping with a traffic stop shot a motorist who attempted to flee and “dragged” the officer, authorities said early Friday morning.
The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the incident, which took place at 167th Street and Western Avenue, Markham Police Chief Mack Sanders said in an emailed statement.
“The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle, at which time he attempted to flee [the] scene with [the] assisting officer being dragged,” Sanders said. “As a result of [the] incident, the officer discharged his weapon, striking the driver.”
Both the officer and the motorist were taken to hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not available.
