Chicago, 3 Killed, 28 Wounded in Shootings on 1st Weekend of August 2017

Maggio News Video A 14-year-old boy gunned down on the steps of a Pilsen home was among three people killed and 28 others wounded in shootings in Chicago over the weekend, according to authorities.

The violence brought the number of people shot in the city this year to at least 2,256, according to data kept by the Tribune. There have been at least 415 homicides.

The three homicides over the weekend happened between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Fourteen-year-old Damien Santoyo was fatally shot about 2:35 a.m. Sunday outside of a home in the 1700 block of South Newberry Avenue on the Near Southwest Side. People inside a passing car yelled gang slogans and someone opened fire, hitting Damien in the head.

“I’m so sorry,” his mother cried out from the same wooden steps where he was killed. “I wasn’t there for you. Oh, my baby. I’m so sorry. Get up, please.”

Early Sunday, a 33-year-old man was fatally shot by a woman in a domestic altercation in the Clearing neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said. Damien Hernandez was shot three times by a 30-year-old woman just before 5:20 a.m. in the 6900 block of West 65th Street. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Hernandez lived on the block where he was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The woman is in custody with charges pending.

About 10:40 p.m. Saturday, a 39-year-old man was fatally shot while in a car near Sherwood Park in the Englewood neighborhood. Officers found Marvin Hines after he crashed into the fence of a home. He lived in the 600 block of West 61st Street, according to the medical examiner’s office.

On Sunday, two men were shot while riding in a car on the Near North Side about 7:55 p.m., police said. The shooting in the 1000 block of North Clark Street critically injured a 33-year-old man. Ten people were wounded in separate attacks within 9 hours from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. A shooting in the 5100 block of South Hoyne Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side critically injured a 31-year-old man riding in a vehicle.
