Maggio News noticed higher than normal police presence in the three major problem areas across the city. I believe Mayor Rahm Emanuel was a little embarrassed. After the former Irish president addressed the issue of shootings and killings before a stunned Chicago City Council meeting Wednesday. I believe the mayor put the hammer down and that is why the police were swarming like bees all over these high crime neighborhoods last night.

Man and Woman Shot Sitting in Car in the Homan Square Neighborhood

A man and a woman were wounded in a shooting late Monday in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side.

They were sitting in a parked car at 11:09 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Flournoy when someone came out of the shadows and started shooting at the couple, multiple shots were fired at the blue Chevy Camaro they were sitting in.

The 36-year-old woman was shot in the right arm and back, while the 39-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the neck, police said. They were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized.

The crowd became very hard to control so officers called in extra CPD units and state police were also there to assist in keeping the peace. This was fast becoming a situation that was quickly getting out of control, after about ten minutes’ police were able to calm the situation, but only after both victims were removed from the car and taken away by ambulance.

Area north detectives are investigating this shooting; the shooter or shooters are still at large.

Labor Day Holiday in Chicago ONLY 10 Wounded in Shootings

Ten people have been wounded in separate shootings since Friday night on the South and West sides, police said.

The most recent shooting left a 24-year-old man with a leg wound in the Austin neighborhood, police said. He had been shot in the 5000 block of West Adams Street about 4:15 a.m. and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition had stabilized. He told police he “heard shots and felt pain.”

Four people were shot in the 100 block of North Seeley in the West Town neighborhood about 3:30 a.m. A 21-year-old man was hit in the right ankle, a 34-year-old man in both legs, a 36-year-old man in the right leg and a 39-year-old man in the right leg. All four are “uncooperative,” police said.

Officers found a crime scene in the neighborhood just east of Damen Avenue and while they were arriving there, officers at Stroger Hospital asked for more cars because of a “free-for-all” fight that broke out in the parking lot.

A couple dozen slapped at each other, yelled and then walked away as police tried to clear the Stroger parking lot. One woman yelled that two men had died as she walked through the emergency room driveway. A boy who pounded on a car parked on Ogden Avenue skipped away and then walked fast from a sergeant who followed from a distance of about ten feet until the boy made it to Damen.

A scuffle broke out an hour later, again at the entrance to the emergency room, and officers cleared the lot.

Someone shot a 20-year-old man in the hand in the West Englewood neighborhood about 2:20 a.m. Saturday. He was outside in the 5600 block of South Marshfield Avenue when someone fired at him from a passing white Pontiac, police said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and is in good condition.

Two women were shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood about 2 a.m. A 26-year-old woman was left in critical condition with a gunshot wound to her back and a 31-year-old was grazed and is in good condition, police said. They were outside in the 4700 block of South Laflin Avenue when someone started shooting from a passing gray minivan. The 26-year-old is at Stroger Hospital and the older woman refused medical attention. The shooting likely is related to a gang conflict between the Latin Saints, who claim territory northwest of the shooting scene, and the La Raza street gang, located to the south. Police at the scene located more than ten shell casings from a rifle in the intersection of 47th and Laflin.

A 29-year-old man was left in critical condition after a Humboldt Park neighborhood shooting Friday night about 9:20 p.m. Police said the shooting happened near the corner of Monticello Avenue and Thomas Street. Someone in a Cadillac SUV fired toward his car.

The 29-year-old apparently fled while being chased – his vehicle was rammed by the same vehicle that the shots came from and he crashed into another car in the 3100 block of West Augusta Boulevard, about a mile away from the shooting. The man shot is in critical condition but other injuries from the car crash are not considered life-threatening, according to police.

About 9 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the South Austin neighborhood. He was in the 100 block of North Parkside Avenue when a vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots. The teen was shot in the back and elbow. He got himself to West Suburban Medical Center and was listed in good condition.
