8 Dead, 50 Wounded in Weekend Shootings in Chicago

(Sun Times Wire) Eight people were killed and at least 50 others have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening.

Seven people were shot, one fatally, during a single mass shooting incident about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

The group was in the parking lot of a banquet hall in the 11900 block of South Loomis when a male in a black SUV opened fire, according to Chicago Police. The SUV then sped away.

A male, whose age was not known, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A 30-year-old man was shot in the left leg; a 31-year-old woman was shot in the left leg; a 32-year-old woman was shot in the right leg; a 32-year-old man was shot in the abdomen; a 33-year-old woman was shot in the left leg; and a 36-year-old man was shot in the buttocks.

Three people were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, while two others were taken to Stroger Hospital, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. They were all listed in serious-to-critical condition. A seventh person was shot and taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, Langford said. That person was in fair-to-serious condition.

About 6:25 p.m. Sunday, a 20-year-old man was killed and two other people were wounded in a shooting in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. The three people were on the porch of a home in the 3000 block of West Polk when someone opened fire from a passing SUV, according to Chicago Police.

The 20-year-old man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately confirm the fatality. A 17-year-old boy was shot in both legs and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, and an 18-year-old man was shot in the right thigh and taken to Stroger Hospital. They were both in good condition.

About 5:10 a.m. Sunday, a 30-year-old man was gunned down in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was in a vehicle, stopped at a stop light in the 3800 block of South Archer when another vehicle approached and someone inside fired multiple shots, police said. The man suffered gunshot wounds to the head, neck and arm and subsequently crashed his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 32-year-old man was killed and two other people were wounded in a shooting about 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side. They were standing on the sidewalk in the 7700 block of North Ashland when someone in a Ford SUV fired shots in their direction. The man was shot in the neck and taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead, police said. A 23-year-old man was shot in the left hip and a 23-year-old woman also suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. They were both also taken to Saint Francis, where their conditions were stabilized.

About 2 a.m. Sunday, a 22-year-old man was shot to death in the University Village neighborhood on the Near West Side. He was standing outside in the 1000 block of West Maxwell when a vehicle drove up, and two people jumped out and opened fire, police said. The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Less than an hour earlier, one man was killed and another was critically wounded in a West Englewood neighborhood shooting on the South Side. A 23-year-old man was standing outside with a group of people about 1:25 a.m. in the 7000 block of South Paulina when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired multiple shots, police said. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. Another man, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

About 4:20 p.m. Saturday, 24-year-old Cornell Verner was gunned down in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. He was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in the 6300 block of South Carpenter when someone walked up and fired shots, striking him multiple times in the face and torso, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Verner, whose home address was not known, was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he died at 4:32 p.m.

Nearly 12 hours earlier, 26-year-old Jerrell J. Perkins was killed and a 45-year-old woman was wounded in another West Pullman neighborhood attack. They were standing on the street near a parked car about 4:30 a.m. Saturday in the 12200 block of South Green when a black SUV pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. Perkins, who lived about a block away, was shot in the head and taken to MetroSouth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:46 a.m., police and the medical examiner’s office said. The woman suffered gunshot wounds to the left arm and left leg and was taken to Christ Medical Center, where her condition was stabilized.

The weekend’s most recent nonfatal shooting happened Sunday night in the West Side Austin neighborhood. A male, whose age was not known, was shot in the abdomen and leg at 8:03 p.m. near the intersection of Madison Street and Central Avenue, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Additionally, a person was shot by a Chicago Police officer about 8:45 p.m. Saturday in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The male suspect suffered a graze wound to the neck and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

Last weekend, nine people were killed and at least 30 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday night and Monday morning.

1 Dead, 13 Wounded in Shootings on Friday Across Chicago

Maggio News Video, (Chicago Tribune) A man was fatally shot after making a court appearance, and a 14 year old boy was among 13 other people who were wounded in separate shootings across the city since Friday morning.

Eight of those people were shot within four hours early Saturday.

The victim, Kenneth Williams, 28, had just appeared at the courthouse Friday morning and had pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving on a revoked or suspended license, according to police and court records.

He apparently got into an argument with someone as he left, police said. He and a woman, 26, had made it to 31st and Rockwell streets when someone in another car pulled up next to them and opened fire, police said.

The woman drove the man back to the entrance of the courthouse.

Williams was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m. Friday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Teen wounded in Pilsen shooting

A 14-year-old boy was grazed in the chest and left knee while he was walking with his sister and a friend just before 9:30 p.m. Friday in the 900 block of West Cullerton Street in the Pilsen neighborhood.

The shooter was in a red sedan and opened fire at the group, grazing the boy, police said.

The teen’s condition was stabilized at Stroger Hospital.

In other shootings:

• In the East Side neighborhood, a 24-year-old man was shot in the left arm while he was standing near a car about 4:20 a.m. Saturday in the 10000 block of South Avenue M on the city’s Southeast Side, police said. The shooter was inside a gold Chevrolet TrailBlazer. His condition was stabilized at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

• About 4 a.m. Saturday, a 25-year-old man was critically wounded during a drive-by shooting in the 8300 block of South Peoria Street in the Gresham neighborhood, police said. He was standing outside when people inside a passing gray Jeep opened fire, striking him in the abdomen and leg. He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

• Two people were wounded in a shooting about 3:45 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of North Homan Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. Two men, 21 and 23, were standing outside when a man opened fire from a nearby alley. The 21-year-old man was shot multiple times, and he was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital. The 23-year-old, who was grazed on the right arm, declined medical attention.

• A 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg about 2:40 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of South Kildare Avenue in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s West Side. He was outside with a large group of people when someone opened fire. The boy’s condition was stabilized at Mount Sinai.

• About 2 a.m. Saturday, a 23-year-old woman was shot in the buttocks while she was sitting on a porch in the 2700 block of East 78th Street in the South Shore neighborhood, police said. A man got out of a car and shot at the woman. She was taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

• A 19-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the Belmont Central neighborhood on the city’s Northwest Side. He was walking in the 5800 block of West Belden Street when someone inside a passing brown minivan shot at the teen, wounding him in the left leg, police said. He took himself to Community First Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

• About 12:50 a.m. Saturday, a 22-year-old man was shot multiple times in the right arm while he was standing in the 1200 block of North Campbell Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said. He was initially taken to Presence Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, and his condition was stabilized at Stroger Hospital.

• In West Garfield Park, a 34-year-old man was shot in the leg late Friday while he was in a car in the 100 block of North Kilbourn Avenue, police said. He was a passenger in a car when two men approached and opened fire. The 34-year-old was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai.

• About 5:35 p.m. Friday, a 30-year-old man was shot in the 5400 block of South May Street in the New City neighborhood, police said. He was standing in an alley when the shooter walked up to him and opened fire, hitting him in the arms and stomach. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger, police said. The shooter was seen leaving in a white car.

• About 11:55 a.m. Friday in the 1100 block of West 31st Street in the Bridgeport neighborhood, a 25-year-old man was driving west on 31st near Aberdeen Street when someone who was going east pulled alongside and opened fire, police said. He was hit in the upper thigh and drove himself to Stroger, where his condition was stabilized. Police said the gunman was in a two-door black car.

• On the Far South Side, a man was shot about 6:45 a.m. Friday as he sat in a truck in an alley in the West Pullman neighborhood, according to police. The 32-year-old man had parked in the alley in the 11700 block of South Calumet Avenue when a gray car pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. He was struck in the back and taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

No one was in custody, police said.

Chicago, 3 Killed, 28 Wounded in Shootings on 1st Weekend of August 2017

Maggio News Video A 14-year-old boy gunned down on the steps of a Pilsen home was among three people killed and 28 others wounded in shootings in Chicago over the weekend, according to authorities.

The violence brought the number of people shot in the city this year to at least 2,256, according to data kept by the Tribune. There have been at least 415 homicides.

The three homicides over the weekend happened between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Fourteen-year-old Damien Santoyo was fatally shot about 2:35 a.m. Sunday outside of a home in the 1700 block of South Newberry Avenue on the Near Southwest Side. People inside a passing car yelled gang slogans and someone opened fire, hitting Damien in the head.

“I’m so sorry,” his mother cried out from the same wooden steps where he was killed. “I wasn’t there for you. Oh, my baby. I’m so sorry. Get up, please.”

Early Sunday, a 33-year-old man was fatally shot by a woman in a domestic altercation in the Clearing neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said. Damien Hernandez was shot three times by a 30-year-old woman just before 5:20 a.m. in the 6900 block of West 65th Street. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Hernandez lived on the block where he was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The woman is in custody with charges pending.

About 10:40 p.m. Saturday, a 39-year-old man was fatally shot while in a car near Sherwood Park in the Englewood neighborhood. Officers found Marvin Hines after he crashed into the fence of a home. He lived in the 600 block of West 61st Street, according to the medical examiner’s office.

On Sunday, two men were shot while riding in a car on the Near North Side about 7:55 p.m., police said. The shooting in the 1000 block of North Clark Street critically injured a 33-year-old man. Ten people were wounded in separate attacks within 9 hours from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. A shooting in the 5100 block of South Hoyne Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side critically injured a 31-year-old man riding in a vehicle.
