Warning Graphic, 4 Dead, 28 Wounded in Weekend Shootings across Chicago

(Sun Times Wire) Four people were killed and at least 28 others, including a 13-year-old boy, have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening.

The weekend’s most recent fatal shooting happened Sunday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood. The attack happened at 10:27 a.m. in the 2600 block of East 75th Street, according to Chicago Police. A 28-year-old man was shot repeatedly in the head and back and was pronounced dead at the scene, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. His identity had not been released Sunday night. A 26-year-old woman was shot in the lower back and taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Another fatal shooting happened at 12:18 a.m. Sunday in the North Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. Officers responded to a call of shots fired and found 22-year-old Jose Rico lying face down on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds to the body in the 5000 block of North Bernard, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Rico was pronounced dead at the scene.

Just before 9 p.m. Friday, someone walked up to 49-year-old Michael Hillard and shot him in his face in the 4700 block West Jackson in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, police and the medical examiner’s office said. Hillard, who lived in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, was pronounced dead at the scene about 15 minutes later.

Less than two hours earlier in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side, 27-year-old Juan Vargas was shot in the head by a person who walked up and opened fire, authorities said. Vargas was found about 7:10 p.m. Friday in the 4000 block of West 25th Place and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died less than an hour later. He lived in the West Elsdon neighborhood.

A 13-year-old boy was shot about 2:40 p.m. Saturday in a separate Little Village neighborhood attack. He was riding his bike in the 2500 block of South St. Louis when someone got out of a light-colored vehicle nearby and fired shots, striking him in the right arm, police said. The boy was taken in good condition to Stroger Hospital.

Earlier in Little Village, an armored car driver shot a person who tried to rob him with a sledgehammer, police and the FBI said. The driver, who works for the Garda armored car service, was making a delivery about 9:30 a.m. Saturday at a currency exchange in the 4300 block of West 26th Street when a male wearing a reflective vest hit him with a sledgehammer in an attempt to rob him. The guard shot the robber, who ran away, but was found nearby and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

At least 25 other people were wounded in citywide shootings between 5 p.m. Friday 9 p.m. Sunday, police said.

3 Dead, 36 Wounded in Shootings on First Fall Weekend in Chicago

(WLS) Three men were shot to death and at least 36 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday evening and Monday morning, marking a violent first weekend of the fall season.

After the latest spate of gun violence, 473 people have been shot dead in the city since the start of the year, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times. Friday marked the end of a violent summer season that left 184 people killed in city gun violence from June 21 to Sept. 21. The city has recorded at least 508 homicides so far in 2017.

A man was killed in a drive-by shooting about 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. Dashawn Townes, 34, was shot by someone in a silver vehicle in the 900-block of North Massasoit, according to Chicago police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Townes, who lived nearby, was struck in the neck and chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 10:07 a.m.

Officers responded to a call of a person shot shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday and found 33-year-old Andrew Dehart lying face down in the street in the 1500-block of South Trumbull in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side, authorities said. Dehart had been shot in the face and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m. He lived on the same block as the shooting.

About 8:15 p.m. Friday, a 28-year-old man was fatally shot in the Hegewisch neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said. He was traveling inside a vehicle in the 13700-block of South Torrence when another vehicle drove past and someone inside opened fire. The man was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

The weekend’s latest nonfatal shooting happened at 2:43 a.m. Monday in the Fernwood neighborhood on the Far South Side. A 36-year-old man was in an argument in the 10100-block of South Wallace when another male pulled out a handgun and shot him in the right leg, police said. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized. A suspect was in custody early Monday as Area South detectives investigated.

At least 35 other people were wounded in Chicago shootings between 7:30 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday.

Last weekend, 11 people were killed and 29 others wounded in citywide attacks between Friday evening and Monday morning.
