Boy 11, Fatally Shot in the Head in East Chicago Park

(NWI TIMES) A Washington Elementary School fifth-grader died Sunday after being shot in the head when a fight broke out Saturday in the city’s Harbor section.

Authorities have identified the boy as 11-year-old David L. Anderson.

School City of East Chicago Superintendent Paige McNulty said grief counselors were available at the school Monday morning to counsel students and staff.

“This is a tragic loss for our school district and for Washington Elementary,” she said. “We have had grief counselors assisting with students and staff there today and we will continue to support our school community for the rest of the week as needed.”

McNulty said the school district was notified Sunday that Anderson had died. She said administrators have been in contact with the family to offer support.

“I know the principal, Andrea Hogan, has talked to the family and offered any help. We are waiting for the arrangements to be made so we can make sure that we assist with that,” McNulty said.

“We are grieving the loss of another youngster in this community and guns are never the answer.”

East Chicago police were dispatched at 5:53 p.m. Saturday to the 3700 block of Elm Street and found a woman administering CPR to the boy, police Lt. Marguerite Wilder said. The area is near Nunez Park.

Witnesses told police a fight broke out between two other children just before a gunshot was heard, she said. Anderson was then found lying on the ground.

The boy was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and later transferred to University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Wilder said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Justin Orange at 219-391-8435. To remain anonymous, call 219-391-8500.
