At least 19 people have been shot, one fatally, in attacks across the city over the first two days of Thanksgiving weekend, according to Chicago Police.

A night earlier, a CPD sergeant fatally shot a 19-year-old man in West Englewood after the sergeant said he saw the man point a gun at him twice during a foot chase, but no weapon had been found as of Thursday night.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened about 1 a.m. Friday in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side, where someone shot a 24-year-old man in the arm and leg as he walked through the 200 block of West 109th Place. His condition was stabilized at Roseland Community Hospital, police said.

Late on Thanksgiving night, two men were shot inside an Austin neighborhood home on the West Side. About 11:45 p.m. Thursday, someone came in through the back door of the home in the 1600 block of North Latrobe and opened fire, hitting a 32-year-old man in the chest, abdomen and thigh, and a 35-year-old twice in the leg, police said. The younger man was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, and the older in good condition to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

Fourteen more people were shot in separate attacks between 7 p.m. Wednesday and 10 p.m. Thursday.

A man was shot and killed by Chicago Police officers after they saw him shoot two other people, killing one and wounding another early Friday in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago.

Harrison District officers heard gunfire while on patrol around 12:25 a.m. they saw someone standing over another person and firing a gun near the intersection of Harrison and Central Park Avenue.

That’s when officers got out of their squad car, and “engaged the offender” and fatally shot him. Because the suspect had just shot two other people, one of whom died on the scene. The wounded man was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm, a weapon was recovered at the scene.

This incident was the city’s second fatal police-involved shooting in just over 24 hours.

The time has come for the residents of these high crime neighborhoods to look in the mirror.
