We’re continuing to investigate a shooting that occurred around 10:50 a.m. in the 900 block of Grove Street where several of our officers were fired upon, forcing them to return fire.

The officers were on an undercover detail in three separate unmarked cars and were watching two vehicles of interest for suspected street gang related activity, when the occupants in one of the vehicles began firing at the officers. Officers in two of the unmarked cars returned fire, hitting one of the occupants in the leg. The vehicle took off but hit a pole in the same block.

All four men inside the vehicle were taken into custody without further incident.

The second vehicle also took off but was stopped about a block away in the 900 block of Superior where an additional man was taken into custody while another fled on foot and was not apprehended.

Two of the suspects are at area hospitals under police guard. Both are undergoing treatment for non-life threatening injuries: the man who was shot in the leg and another who suffered apparent injuries as part of the car crash. At least one gun has been recovered from one of the vehicles.

None of the officers were hit and there were no other injuries.

An elementary school in the 1200 block of Front Street was placed on soft lock down for a short time during the initial incident.

This is an active investigation and we are continuing to ask people to stay away from the area. More information will be released as it becomes available.
