Armed Fleeing Suspect Shot, Critically Wounded by Chicago Cop

(WGN) A man was taken to the hospital after being shot by police on the city’s South Side.

The shooting happened at the end of a police pursuit around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The suspect was shot and taken into custody in a vacant lot just off 61st and King Drive in the Washington Park neighborhood.

“The officers responded to the scene. While they were there, they encountered a subject armed with a semi-automatic pistol. At one point, the officer fired and shot the offender,” Deputy Chief Kevin Ryan said.

Police said they called an ambulance right away and recovered a handgun at the scene.

Third district cops were responding to multiple 911 shots-fired calls. Some of the police activity was concentrated around 63rd and South Vernon–close to the shooting scene and known for drug and gang activity.

While police say the suspect was brandishing a weapon, they said they don’t believe he fired it.

“I do not believe he fired his weapon at this time. But like I said, it’s very preliminary. I don’t have all the information,” Ryan said.

The offender was transported to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound. He is in critical condition.

The officers involved were wearing body cameras and the video will be reviewed. The officers involved were placed on desk duty for 30 days.
