7 People Killed, 23 Wounded in Chicago Weekend Shootings

(Sun Times Wire) Seven people were killed, and 23 others wounded in shootings across Chicago this weekend.

More than half of the fatal attacks happened within a four-hour span Sunday morning. In the latest of those shootings, a 34-year-old man was killed in Little Village on the Southwest Side.

About 4:50 a.m., he was found outside in the 2800 block of West 23rd Street with multiple gunshot wounds, Chicago police said. The man was brought to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was identified as David Lopez, who lived in the neighborhood where he was shot, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Murder on Irving Park Road

A 52-year-old man was murdered while riding in the backseat of a car Monday morning in Irving Park. He was shot by someone inside a passing Honda Odyssey about 4:45 a.m. in the 4100 block of West Irving Park Road, police said.

The man, shot in his legs, was driven to Community First Hospital and was set to be transferred to Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Police said he was pronounced dead about 7 a.m.

2 dead in Washington Heights

Earlier Sunday, a man was killed and another wounded in Washington Heights. The two men were shot inside a home during a gathering about 1 a.m. in the 1100 block of West 104th Street, officials said.

Darryl Houston, 39, was shot in the head and was pronounced dead on the scene. The other man, 33, was struck in the abdomen and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.

Gresham homicide

Minutes earlier, a 24-year-old man was fatally shot in Gresham on the South Side. Officers found Anthony Rice, of Gresham, unresponsive about 12:50 a.m. Sunday in the 7900 block of South Paulina Street with gunshot wounds to the back, lower backside and legs, officials said. Rice was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.

West Pullman murder

On Saturday night, a person was found dead in a burning vehicle in West Pullman on the Far South Side.

Officers responded to a car fire about 8:44 p.m. in the 12000 block of South Yale Avenue and found a male unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner’s office hasn’t released details on the fatality.

Fatal West Lawn shooting

Friday night, a man was shot to death in West Lawn on the Southwest Side. Justin Reyes, 26, was shot in the head and chest about 8:55 p.m. by two males who approached him and opened fire as he stood outside a home in the 6500 block of South Kenneth Avenue, officials said. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Woman killed in West Pullman.

Another Friday night shooting left a woman dead in West Pullman on the Far South Side.

The woman was found in an alley with a gunshot wound to her head about 9:50 p.m. in the 100 block of East 118th Place, police said. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police said there are currently no witnesses to the shooting and could not immediately provide any further details.

5-year-old girl among the wounded

In nonfatal shootings, a 5-year-old girl and a man were wounded Sunday in Gresham on the South Side.

They were in a vehicle just before 6 p.m. in the 900 block of West 76th Street when someone unleashed gunfire, police said. The girl was struck in the buttocks area while the man suffered gunshot wounds to his back and forearm. Police said the pair showed up at Holy Cross Hospital, where they are in good condition.

In the weekend’s earliest reported shooting, a man was critically wounded Friday in East Garfield Park on the West Side.

The 24-year-old was shot about 6:05 p.m. when a group of males in a silver vehicle opened fire at people standing on the sidewalk in the 3800 block of West Gladys Avenue, police said. The man, who was sitting in a parked vehicle, was struck on the right side of his body and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

At least 19 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday.

Last weekend, 24 people were shot, 6 fatally, in Chicago.
