(Chicago Tribune) The woman seemed to come out of nowhere as she sprinted inside the birthday party amid a hail of gunfire, witnesses said.
The young woman fell near the entrance, partygoers said, as a car sped away. Two men and another woman were also hit with bullets.
The birthday party then erupted into chaos, as people ran away from the venue in the 3200 block of West Division Street in the West Side’s Humboldt Park neighborhood.
A 19-year-old woman was rushed to Stroger Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the neck after the quadruple shooting around 1 a.m.
“I just dove to the floor,” a woman said as she rushed to her car with friends.
They saw the shooting unfold in fast and frightening detail. Some party attendees froze in their spots. Others dropped to the ground as well.
“We were under a table,” the woman’s friend said, as she got into the passenger seat of the car.
Edgar Estrada, who lives next-door to the venue, was sleeping when he heard four to five gunshots.
“I looked out and saw a body on the ground,” Estrada said. “But he got up.”
Estrada said he saw three of the victims loaded onto stretchers and rushed away.
The men, 24 and 21, and the other woman, 30, were taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where the woman and 21-year-old man were in good condition with wounds to the arm and hand, respectively, and the 24-year-old man was stabilized with a gunshot wound to the lower back.
Estrada left his apartment and went down to the scene, where dozens of people were streaming out of the party. They ran into alleys, and to their cars, he said.
“People were all panicking,” Estrada said.
Residents of the neighborhood said the small brick building with floor-length windows was a dance studio that was rented out for a birthday party.
Division Street was blocked off for about a block west of Kedzie as officers placed markers on bullet casings.
The party venue was brightly lit early Sunday, with balloons still floating in the room.
