(WGN) Three people were killed and four others injured during two shootings in the University Village neighborhood Sunday morning, in what police say are likely related incidents.
“Now that summer’s kicking off, hot weather, people don’t know how to act,” said Tatiana Serrano, who said she’s visiting relatives in the area.
Evidence markers litter the ground and layers of red and yellow crime tape cross 13th street near the Brooks Homes, a CHA housing complex which was the scene of the shootings.
It started with a big party in the streets where police say they broke up a crowd of about 100 people late Saturday night. Hours later, police were called back to the area around 1:30 a.m. Once there, they discovered a 27-year-old man on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
A 25-year-old woman was shot in the arm and self-transported to Stroger Hospital where she was stabilized.
“Police picked up the body. Did their little forensics. Took the tape down. Everybody came back out. Partied again,” a witness said.
Around 6 a.m., dozens of officers flooded the scene on the 1300 block of West Hastings Street after five people were shot in a drive-by, two of them fatally.
Two men, a 27-year-old and a 26-year-old were shot and taken to Cook County Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Two women were sitting in a black sedan when they were shot in the hip and arm, and are in good condition after taking themselves to Mount Sinai Hospital.
“The city of Chicago police department could have avoided it by staying on the property, the premises and telling people to go,” Serrano said.
A fifth person sustained a graze wound on his nose, and is also one of four people officials say is being questioned as a person of interest. Police say multiple weapons were recovered, and one of the persons of interest is believed to have fired a semi-automatic TEC-9 pistol.
Police said both of the shootings are believed to be related. Family members say one of the men killed Sunday is 27-year-old Martez Cox, a father of two young boys. A sixth person was injured by shattered glass during the second incident.
