(WGN) Two people were shot during a crime spree Thursday that started with the carjacking of an undercover Chicago police officer in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
The female officer was carjacked around 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of West Chicago Avenue, according to the Chicago Tribune. The offender, who is now in custody, fled with the officer’s car on Lake Shore Drive.
The officer was not harmed.
The suspect then drove to Chicago and Larrabee, where he tried to carjack a 37-year-old man in a black Nissan. The man was shot in his arm.
The crime spree continued near the 1400 block of Inner Drive. The suspect dumped the car that belonged to the undercover officer, then ran away and carjacked a Jeep. The offender then drove on Inner Lake Shore Drive, abandoned the Jeep and then shot an 84-year-old man in a Mercedes.
That second shooting victim suffered a graze wound.
Both shooting victims suffered minor injuries and are being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The suspect then fled into a condo building where police caught up with him and took him into custody. Police said the man has a long record of arrests. The Tribune said the arrest occurred near Oak and State streets.
Police said the offender was carrying a semi-automatic handgun when he was captured.
Charges are pending.
