(Sun Times Wire) One person was killed and another was wounded Monday in what was the only reported shooting in Chicago that day.
An 18-year-old man and 15-year-old boy were standing on a sidewalk about 5:40 p.m. in the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue when someone rode up on a bicycle and fired shots, Chicago police said.
Markel Smith, 18, was struck in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital where he later died, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was from Lawndale.
The 15-year-old was shot in the hand, authorities said. His condition was stabilized at the same hospital.
The shooter fled south on Lawndale, authorities said. Area North detectives are investigating.
Monday’s shooting came after a violent Fourth of July weekend in which five people were killed and 63 were wounded.
