1 Dead, 17 Wounded in Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

(Sun Times Wire) A man was killed and at least 17 other people were wounded in a series of shootings across Chicago since Friday night.

The fatal shooting happened early Sunday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. The man, whose age wasn’t immediately known, was found with a gunshot wound to the head about 4 a.m. in the 1900 block of West 52nd Street, according to Chicago Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the death.

The weekend’s most recent non-fatal shooting wounded a 17-year-old boy Sunday night in Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. About 10:10 p.m., the boy was walking on the sidewalk in the 1700 block of North Western Avenue when someone drove up and fired shots, police said. The boy showed up at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his right arm. He was going to be transferred to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

A few hours earlier, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the Southwest Side’s Gage Park neighborhood. About 7:15 p.m., the boy was standing in the 5700 block of South Mozart when a light colored sedan drove up and someone inside fired shots, police said. The boy was shot in the arm. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

In the same evening, a woman was shot Sunday evening in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. About 5:50 p.m., a 46-year-old woman was arguing with someone in the 4600 block of West Jackson Avenue when that person pulled out a handgun and fired shots, police said. She was grazed in the upper right thigh and was taken by paramedics to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. The person who fired the gun fled the scene.

Within the same hour, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the West Side’s West Garfield Park neighborhood. The shooting happened about 5:15 p.m. in the 4600 block of West Erie Street, police said. The boy was shot in the back and then transported himself to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. He was transferred to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

That afternoon, two men were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. At 2:21 p.m. the men, ages 27 and 30, were in the 4200 block of West Van Buren when a light-colored sedan pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to police.

The younger man suffered gunshot wounds to the buttocks and abdomen, while the older man was shot in his arm, police said. They were both taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the younger man was listed in fair condition and the older man was in good condition.

Earlier Saturday, a man was shot and seriously wounded in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The 33-year-old was standing in an alley about 12:15 a.m. in the 6500 block of North Francisco when another male walked up and shot him in the chest, police said. He was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital before being transferred in serious condition to Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

At least 10 other people were wounded in shootings over the weekend.

Last weekend, seven people were killed and 13 others were wounded in citywide shootings.
