Police in Chicago’s south suburbs were continuing to search Sunday night for an armed and dangerous murder suspect.

On Saturday night, the suspect stole two cars and murdered a security guard before vanishing into the night.

The crime spree started in Harvey, where the suspect stole a car and crashed it near a Canadian National railyard at 159th and Park. The police were close on the suspect’s heels, since the car’s owner had witnesses the theft and called 911.

After crashing, the suspect ran up on the train tracks. That’s where he found Tyrone Hardin, 38, who was working security. The suspect shot Hardin in the stomach and he died a short time later.

Hardin’s family said he was married with a 5-year-old son. A sister said he was a hard-working man who had two jobs to try to support his family.
“Anyone that knew him knew he was a caring, a loving person,” said Michele Hardin. “His death just seems senseless.”

After shooting Hardin, the suspect took off in Hardin’s car. He dumped it two miles south, near 171st and Park.

Saturday was Hardin’s mother’s birthday.

“As she lives life, and reaches her birthday, she has to think of this senseless killing that happened,” Michele Hardin said. “This senselessness that’s going on — it really needs to stop.”

Harvey city officials said police have a lot to go on.

“The surveillance tapes have taken us a long way,” said Harvey city spokesperson Sean Howard. “We can say that we’ve seen some images that we feel very confident will lead us to the capture of this individual.”

In the meantime, people in East Hazel Crest, Harvey, Hazel Crest and Markham are asked to call police if they have any information.
