Unlike the anti-rape seminar given during Freshman orientation which is mandatory (are you against that as well?), this event wasn’t. If one chose to attend a seminar that was not school sponsored or funded (albeit directly by the administration) that was their choice.

I have heard stories from several people close to me in their 50′s who grew up in very religious catholic/ christian families about the shock/ horror they experienced during puberty, the infamous wedding night, and so on. And those people ended up becoming the most open minded because they didn’t want their children to have the same experiences. By open minded, I don’t mean they bought their kids booze and condoms in their early teens but rather sat down and taught them that their body is nothing to be ashamed of.

And Ford Chapel? More than just a church. There is no true “altar” though there is religious paraphernalia that is arranged prior to the services (I’ve attended both). I have attended classes (you know “real ones”), vigils, memorial services, and town hall meetings in Ford Chapel. And quite frankly if a group of people not connected to the college have the right to use the space and then criticize the school and students, then I see no reason to not allow students to learn in a safe environment with people their own age.

fatuous1 Rumbles Down the Campaign Trail Directly Towards the LOUISINA STATE HOUSE!

Although learning about sex is not hard-core academia, I’m sure it’ll be a useful life skill for marriages, relationships, etc, which unsurprisingly many people are not competent with. Although the location of this event is not ideal, if you would have investigated more into the attendance of the event, other available venues, and other events occurring at the same time, it would become obvious why this happened here. This same chapel hosts religious events, domestic violence awareness vigils, honor’s ceremonies, etc. I’d like to think that good outweighs the bad.

Finally, Allegheny College gives a thorough sex education, anti-rape, training during orientation for those who wish to partake in sexual activities during their college career. So before attending this event, many of these students are far more knowledgeable in their beliefs and safety than many might assume.
